What Is The Difference Between NVR and DVR?

By | News | No Comments

When it comes to video surveillance, there are two types of systems to choose from. The first is NVR, and the second is a DVR System. But what is the difference between NVR and DVR?

Let us start by looking at what NVR and DVR means.

  • NVR stands for Network Video Recorder Systems
  • DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder Systems

Both the NVR and DVR systems perform the same function of recording footage. However, the difference is how they record the footage.

NVR Security Systems

NVR systems record and store video footage directly from the network it lives on. NVR systems work with IP Cameras. These IP cameras capture and process video and audio data themselves. The way it does this is using an Ethernet cable or wirelessly via an existing Wi-Fi network.

DVR Security Systems

A DVR system is considered to be an older ‘legacy’ option. Unlike the NVR system, DVR systems work with analogue cameras. Analogue cameras are unable to process video footage. Instead, an analogue camera will stream raw video footage to recorders via coaxial cables. The DVR system will then process the video footage.

Once the video from the DVR or NVR is processed, both systems will work in the same way. You will just need to connect them to a smartphone or any other viewing device. Then, you will easily be able to access and view your video footage.

About NVR Security Systems (advantages)

NVR systems can record video and audio. It offers better image quality and more system flexibility too. You will gain better coverage with NVR as one camera can have multiple lenses. NVR systems can also be wired or wireless. Also, NVR systems only require one cable for video, audio and power. Having one cable to route gives more flexibility during an install. Your NVR security system can be used to identify faces, license plates and much more. This is a direct result of having much higher image quality.

However, it is worth noting that NVR systems are typically a more expensive option.

About DVR Security Systems

DVR systems are less expensive than an NVR system and much simpler to set up. DVR systems that use HD over Coaxial technology have lower image quality, but they are improving.

Now you know the differences between NVR and DVR systems; which will you choose?

Are CCTV Signs A Legal Requirement?

By | News | No Comments

CCTV surveillance is a necessary security measure for many businesses up and down the country. By using CCTV cameras in the workplace, you can safeguard your business, your premises and your employees.

Many homeowners also purchase CCTV cameras for their homes as a way to protect themselves, their home and their family from potential crime.

However, if you don’t have the right CCTV signage in place, you could find yourself infringing on strict privacy laws that protect the rights of individual people.

Prominent signs are essential when CCTV cameras are placed unobtrusively or installed in areas where people do not expect to be under surveillance. There is an added benefit to CCTV signs, though. They work as brilliant deterrent to potential criminals. When a criminal is made aware that they are being watched, they will often think twice about committing the crime. The cost of CCTV signs is relatively low, for the GDPR and deterrent benefits they provide.

Listed below are the points of CCTV signs that you need to be aware of to ensure you meet GDPR requirements.

  • CCTV camera signage needs to be clearly visible and easy to read. The CCTV signs need to show the details of the organisation who are operating the cameras. On top of this, the signage needs to explain the specific purpose of the CCTV. Also that it’s designated for that particular area, It also needs co display advice on who to contact if someone has any queries.
  • The signs must be an appropriate size in relation to their context and where they are placed. For example, if the CCTV sign needs to be seen by someone driving a car, then it needs to be a large CCTV sign. However, a small shop would require a significantly smaller sign.
  • If you have CCTV cameras on your business premises, you need to ensure that all staff members know what to do if someone enquires about the CCTV cameras. All signs in public areas must clearly show the name of the organisation of the authority that is responsible for the CCTV surveillance systems.
  • You need to think carefully about where you place and position your CCTV cameras. While your cameras may be positioned on-site, they may still be capturing images of people walking by the business premises too. If this is the case for your surveillance cameras, you will need to ensure that CCTV signs are visible inside and outside your business.

The Difference Between Biometric Fingerprint Reads and Bluetooth via Smarthphone or Watch

By | News | No Comments

Due to the current situation involving the coronavirus it is important to avoid passing anything onto each other and while some companies and homes have fingerprint scanners that work for them. They can be hubs for the virus to propagate and be passed on from one person to another.

Biometric Fingerprints

Biometric means data derived from genetic analytics and is often used as a security precaution. For example there are many different types of security of biometrics, fingerprint and eye scanners, DNA scanning. They are highly regarded as being an extremely reliable form of security because it is so near impossible to recreate another’s DNA.

What is Mobile Access Control?

Mobile access is when you use a smart device such as a smartphone, tablet or wearable device to access secured doors, gates or networks. This greatly helps user access and convenience since they can use their credentials used on their smart device to access what they need and these can be changed and modified a lot more effectively than a traditional smart card or fob. Smart Devices can be used in 3 main ways:

  1. By touching the Smart device to the reader
  2. By walking up to the device and within 2M the reader will recognize the device
  3. By within 5M if in a vehicle by a barrier

So you can use your personal device to access secure environments without exposing yourself to anything in these uncertain times. Biometrics require human contact with a device to analyse the submitted biometric data. The key difference between the two is the lack of contact needed for Mobile Access which is something that is extremely worthwhile in the current state of the world.

The Importance Of Maintaining Your Intruder System

By | News | No Comments

After investing in security for your home and an intruder system, you may feel that you are safe and secure. However, there is still the importance of maintaining your intruder system that you need to consider.

Why would you invest in an intruder system and then not check it still works? Regularly maintaining your intruder system means that you know it is doing its job and keeping you safe if the worst were to happen and an intruder tried to access your property.

Just as you regularly maintain your car with petrol, windscreen washer, new tyres and an annual MOT, you need to make sure your intruder alarm is maintained correctly too. In this blog post, we look at the importance of maintaining your intruder system.

Longer Guarantees

Once your standard alarm system guarantee expires, you won’t be covered on any part replacements; no matter how big or small they may be. However, when you have a contract to maintain your intruder system, the parts and labour charges are covered – and you’ll know that your intruder system is in good working order.

Priority Response

Every now and again, a faulty intruder alarm will go off in the middle of the night for no reason. Things like power cuts or power surges can often be a reason for this. In some cases, it can be impossible to turn the alarm off, and before you know it, you are everyone’s least favourite neighbour in your area. If you have a maintenance contract in place for your intruder system, it is less likely the intruder alarm will develop a fault. You will also have someone you can call to repair the alarm for you, without having to call round to find someone in the middle of the night that may or may not know your intruder system and could charge the earth for the service.

Peace of Mind

Regularly maintaining your intruder alarm gives you the peace of mind that your intruder alarm works. Whether you are going to bed at night or off on holiday for two weeks, you know that your intruder system works and it will keep your property safe and secure. If you do not correctly maintain your intruder system, the first time you know it doesn’t work is when someone breaks into your property, and you don’t know about it until after the incident.

Call us now to book your intruder alarm maintenance check.

Importance of maintaining the CCTV

By | News | No Comments

CCTV surveillance is an excellent deterrent for potential thieves. If the potential thief sees CCTV on your building, this can often be enough to put them off your property and try their luck elsewhere instead. Every business is susceptible to a break-in, no matter your business size, location or industry. How you protect your business is what could make a break-in less likely. CCTV surveillance is an excellent tool for protecting your business. However, if it is not maintained correctly, then what is the point in the CCTV camera in the first place?

A CCTV surveillance system is only as good as the maintenance and upkeep that it is given.

The old saying goes that prevention is better than cure. While the CCTV is the prevention to help reduce crime in your business premises, If a break-in were to take place in your business, would you be able to rely on your CCTV footage, so the police have the evidence they need to catch the perpetrators? Would you have the evidence you need to make an insurance claim?

This is where the importance of maintaining the CCTV comes in.

If you don’t frequently monitor your CCTV camera functionality, how do you know that they are in good working order? If you don’t check they’re working, how do you know your CCTV cameras won’t let you down if your business is broken into.

You may also find that your insurance company refuse to pay out on your claim if your CCTV surveillance is not in good working order. You may find your insurers are less willing to pay out for damaged and losses for your business.

The importance of CCTV maintenance isn’t just checking they are working, but checking they are recording the right things too. If you have moved your office or warehouse around you may find that the view of the CCTV camera is now blocked, or has been knocked, so it is recording a spot on the wall. The current set-up of your CCTV surveillance system could be outdated if things in your business premises have moved.

Why not book your CCTV maintenance check now? Even the most high-quality CCTV cameras can have glitches now and again. A CCTV maintenance check will ensure there are no issues and fix any problems that do arise. Giving you the peace of mind that if a break-in does occur that your CCTV cameras will not let you down.

Moved to a New House Does The New Property Have Security, The Codes Will need To Be Changed?

Moved to a New House Does The New Property Have Security, The Codes Will need To Be Changed?

Moving home is a very exciting but stressful time in everyone’s life. No matter how much planning, something will always come up and create additional stress. You may have forgotten to tell Aunt Mavis you were moving house, maybe you have not paid the last bill for the window cleaner, or you can’t remember which box the kettle is in so you can have a much-needed cup of tea.

These may seem like little things, but they can cause lots of stress and upset when you are in the process of moving house!

You may feel some peace of mind that your new home has excellent home security. Maybe you have CCTV cameras, an intruder alarm or even a secure coded gate to enter your property?

But who else has these codes to your property?

The people that used to own your home will have these codes to your security gate. They will have the system codes to view your CCTV security. They may also still have the keys to your home, and of course, they have the intruder alarm code too.

Even the people that lived in the home before may have installed the security gates and other home security system. They could also have the codes to all the equipment and alarms that are keeping your home safe and secure. Or perhaps even the people that lived before them had the security equipment installed, and it’s not been changed since then?

How about the estate agent? They will have needed codes to enter the home when it was for sale, and they were showing potential buyers around your new home. How many agents have the system codes to your home security, and how were these codes stored?

Maybe the past homeowners had a cleaner or someone that came to walk their dog? Perhaps a neighbour watered the plants when they were on holiday? Now that’s potentially allotted of individuals you don’t know that could have access to your home.

Moving into a new home with excellent home security is great, but you do need to get those codes changed – for your own security!
